Late-payment interest calculator
How much interest is due on a late invoice under Hungarian law? Between businesses it is the central bank base rate + 8 percentage points, with the base rate reset every half-year.
The rule in brief
Between businesses
In contracts between businesses (and where the debtor is a contracting authority), late-payment interest is the central bank base rate valid on the first day of the calendar half-year concerned, plus 8 percentage points (Ptk. 6:155. § (1)).
In every other case
Where the contract is not between businesses, late-payment interest equals the central bank base rate valid on the first day of the half-year (Ptk. 6:48. § (1)).
It changes every half-year
The rate is not a single number: each calendar half-year (1 January, 1 July) uses the MNB base rate valid at its start. A longer delay is therefore made up of several rates.
Fixed recovery costs
Between businesses, the creditor can also claim the forint equivalent of EUR 40 on top of the interest, under Act IX of 2016 on the flat-rate recovery fee.
