How long is the notice period under the Hungarian Labour Code? 30 days by default, longer with length of service when the employer gives notice.
The rule in brief
The base: 30 days
The notice period is 30 days, whether the employer or the employee gives notice (Mt. 69. § (1)). It starts no earlier than the day after notice is given (Mt. 68. §).
Longer when the employer gives notice
Based on time spent with the employer, the notice period is extended by 5 days after 3 years, 15 after 5, 20 after 8, 25 after 10, 30 after 15, 40 after 18 and 60 days after 20 years (Mt. 69. § (2)).
By agreement
The parties may agree on a longer notice period of up to six months (Mt. 69. § (3)).
Release from work
When the employer gives notice, the employee must be released from work for at least half of the notice period, with absence pay for that time (Mt. 70. §).
